Donner Lake Fishing Guide

Donner Lake is a 950 acre freshwater lake in Northeast California on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada and about 20 miles northwest of the much larger Lake Tahoe.

Donner Lake is a cold-water fishery that offers great fishing for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Lake Trout, Kokanee Salmon and Sockeye Salmon. Fishing from a boat is the most preferred way, but there are some shoreline spots to fish from. Anglers trolling for Kokanee Salmon are mostly having great success usually early in the mornings at the first light of the day.

Donner Lake does have a public boat launch and rental boats are available at the marina.

Fishing is legal one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset.

Donner Lake has a reputation for producing larger Mackinaw than at nearby Lake Tahoe.

Donner Lake is in the scenic Sierra Nevada mountain range that is 950 acres, is 2.70 miles long and .6 miles wide at an elevation of about 6,000.
